Welcome to the Winter 2024 Issue of e-Access Insight!
Howard Moutrie, Hamish Murray and I attended the ARHC’s (Australian Human Rights Commission) consultation on Accessible Housing Guidelines on behalf of ACA. A formal response was prepared – PLEASE CLICK HERE to view a copy of the response. In brief the ACA response proposed that the guidelines be revised to include the following:
- Reference to, and inclusion of, Australian standards and dimensions.
- A concurrent update of AS4299 potentially re-published as AS1428.8 with potentially a different title.
- Redrafting of the Siting section to reflect urban, regional, remote, reference state and territory planning systems, land use zoning and suggested concessions and incentives when developing social and affordable housing relevant to all states and territories.
- Collaboration with ACA and Standards Australia.
- Moving away from Silver, Gold and Platinum level so as to not cause confusion in the market with similar schemes already in place.
The ACA CPD webinar series have commenced, with the first one on Office Ergonomics (by Occupational Therapist, Dani Polita) being very well received. If you have already registered, you can view the recording on the ACA website. If you have missed it, you can CLICK HERE to register to view.
The upcoming CPD events are LISTED HERE:
- Understanding AS 1428.5 Communication for people who are deaf or hearing impaired
- Toilets for Everyone (Considerations for All Gender Toilets)
- Web Accessibility
We are also planning a full day mini virtual conference on the 18 October, 2024. We are accepting expressions of interest to be presenters at the virtual conference. Please email through your expression of interest to [email protected] with a one paragraph summary on the access related topic you would like to present on, along with a brief CV. We are particularly interested in submissions on the topic of DSAPT (Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport), study of built projects that excel in accessibility, Australian Standards concerning accessibility, and accessibility related research projects.
We are also looking for enthusiastic ACA members, who are based in Melbourne, to join our Conference planning sub-committee, with the aim of potentially having a face-to-face conference in Melbourne in 2025
I look forward to providing you with more updates soon. Meanwhile I can be contacted directly on [email protected]
