Introduction
The Editorial Team for Access Insight, the magazine for the Access Consultants Association (ACA), welcomes the submission of articles. In preparing an article to feature in Access Insight, the Editorial Team provide you with the following direction:
Language
Use language that promotes inclusiveness and the fair and accurate portrayal of people with a disability, promoting the person before the disability. In preparing your article familiarise yourself with the information provided in the guideline prepared by the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services, Queensland, entitled: A way with words: Guidelines for the portrayal of people with a disability (https://www.qld.gov.au/disability/documents/community/way-with-words.pdf).
Images
When providing photographs or images (drawings, tables, charts etc) ensure they are a high quality for publication and please provide a descriptive caption to be included with each image. Ensure where required that photographs or images are acknowledged for author / photographs, if required.
Ensure you provide a succinct tile for your article, your name, your profession as appropriate and membership status with ACAA, if applicable.
Article limit
Please note that the limit of articles accepted from an author is a maximum of two articles per any four consecutive issues.
Readership
Consider the magazine readership.
The ACA is a national membership-based professional association for people working to achieve accessibility in the built environment for all. It is the peak national body for access consultancy in Australia and a major partner in advancing equity of built environmental accessibility for people with a disability.
The magazine reach is national, not just to ACA members, but also product suppliers, people with an interest in the advancement of, or advocacy for, people with a disability and people with lived experience of disability. Readers have a broad variety of backgrounds, including:
- ACA Members with a professional background who may also work in another professional field as well as in the field of access consulting (e.g. architect, occupational therapist, building surveyor)
- ACA Members with a variety of educational backgrounds, aligned with access consulting, including a university level degree or equivalent in architecture, occupational therapy, surveying, project management or the like. Some readers may have completed the Certificate IV or Diploma in Access Consulting.
- People with lived experience of disability.
- Suppliers of products aligned with access to the built environment.
- Peak body groups that relate to the provision of services for people with a disability.
- People with an interest in the principles of inclusive or universal design.
Bio
As the article author, a short bio (max of 3 sentences) is permissible to be included in your article and the Editor requests a head-shot photo is also provided for inclusion in the title line of your article.
Editorial Process
On submission of your article, the article will be proofread to ensure the above parameters are met.
If the Editor identifies any area of concern, particularly in relation to the way persons with a disability are portrayed in the language used or if Editor is cognisant the information is misleading or incorrect, the article will be returned to you, to enable you to make adjustments to ensure the article is not in contravention to ACA’s Objectives.
Terms and conditions of providing an article for Access Insight
As the author of the article, it is your responsibility to ensure:
- The information you present or claims you make are true and correct.
- Reference is made to any source documents that are quoted in the article.
- Where opinions are expressed, that the reader can clearly distinguish opinion from facts.
- You have permission to use photographs (drawings, tables, charts etc) and where necessary due credit is given for images, tables, photographs and the like. All images supplied must comply with copyright laws (that is, you have permission to use them for this purpose, either via purchase or via written permission)
- The page / word count limit is not exceeded
- You have permission to present a case study or use the name of a person with a disability, a colleague or any other person, in your article.
- Acronyms are expanded.
- You confirm that you are the copyright owner of any of the material / photos provided by you and give us full non-revokable permission to publish the article / photos and other content as we see fit.
- Content of the article does not contain any words or images that may be considered defamatory, false or misleading.
- You will not be paid for the article and you understand that the article will be distributed via the ACAA network, including social media, and will be retained on the ACAA website Access Insight magazine archive on ACAA website.
