By The Open Space team
The Open Space team are thrilled to announce the release of two invaluable resources: the Places to Swim and Adventurous Spaces guides. The guides provide crucial information for anyone planning, designing or managing high-quality outdoor spaces for the community. We have worked closely with industry, government and key stakeholders to empower councils, landowners, designers, industry professionals, user groups and communities when creating engaging and safe environments for swimming and adventurous activities within public open space. The guides have been updated following feedback to our exhibition earlier this year.
Places to Swim
Places to Swim is about connecting people to water in places that need it the most. The guide helps provide better access to water for recreation, with practical tools for anyone involved in establishing or managing a swim site.
From enhancing access to public open spaces near water to outlining water quality testing requirements and ongoing management needs, Places to Swim is an indispensable resource.

Adventurous Spaces
With the increasing demand for skateparks, bike tracks, and trails, Adventurous Spaces offers guidance on planning, designing, delivering and managing quality adventurous spaces. Whether you’re involved in creating skateparks, tracks or trails, this practical tool equips you to meet the growing demand for places to skate, scoot, and ride BMX and mountain bikes.

Both guides support delivery of the Public Open Space Strategy for NSW, recognising that public open space is the cornerstone of liveable communities. They reflect the importance of public open space as essential infrastructure for communities and in creating great places to live.
