Hearing Augmentation Systems
The ACA Queensland Network held its third meeting and training session on the 23 April, 2026 on the Gold Coast. The session brought together access consultants for networking and professional development, with attendees sharing knowledge and discussing opportunities to strengthen the Queensland access consulting community.
The key feature of the session was a presentation by Ian Riddle from Hearing Loop Australia, who provided a detailed overview of hearing augmentation systems and their application in built environments. The presentation covered induction loop systems, wireless technologies, infrared systems, Wifi-based systems and emerging Bluetooth Auracast technology. Ian also discussed key compliance considerations under the National Construction Code, particularly for Class 9b buildings such as schools, auditoriums, meeting rooms, conference rooms and public assembly spaces.
A strong focus of the training was the practical application of hearing augmentation systems, including signage requirements, coverage expectations, testing and maintenance, and the importance of selecting the right system for the setting. The discussion highlighted that access consultants need to consider not only technical compliance, but also usability, system reliability and the needs of people using hearing aids or cochlear implants in everyday environments.
Ian presented different hearing equipment technologies for the attendees to experience. They were able to appreciate firsthand how these devices, including the latest systems on the market, can enhance the experience for persons with a hearing impairment.
Overall, the session was a valuable opportunity to deepen understanding of hearing augmentation systems and their role in creating more inclusive, accessible and functional spaces for people with hearing needs.
